Setting new standards for rotary steering economics

Pathmaker® 3-D Rotary Steerables

PathMaker® 3-D Rotary Steerable System

The PathMaker® 3-D Rotary Steerable System provides the operator with the technology to steer the wellbore precisely into the target while continuously rotating the drillstring. The system can be configured as either Point-the-bit or Push-the-bit depending on the application. All steering is done while continuously rotating the drillstring, thus maximizing efficiency. The PathMaker® System functions with all of PathFinder’s real-time formation evaluation sensors/services for versatility and convenience. The PathMaker System can also be run with mud motors to increase bit RPM and improve penetration rates in specific formations.

The PathMaker® Rotary Steerable System controls the inclination and azimuth utilizing three steering pads, two adjusted and locked into place and a third maintaining wellbore contact, ensuring the tool is optimally positioned.

The tool face and offset is programmed by varying the drill string RPM over specified time intervals. Since rotation is never stopped, commands can be sent to the tool while drilling ahead eliminating downtime. The System has an automated inclination and azimuth Hold Mode for drilling tangents and horizontal sections-controlling the well trajectory without any surface input. This saves rig time by eliminating sending down-link commands to the tool.

The electronics system monitors the position of the non-rotating section and the extension of the steering pads, while the downhole processor calculates the required extensions to achieve the desired tool face and offset while drilling ahead.

To optimize performance, recent upgrades to the PathMaker System have been made to include Real-time Stick-slip and Vibration Detection™ (RSVD™) and Real-time Pad Contact Caliper™ (RTPCC™).

RSVD™ was incorporated for use in extended reach and horizontal wells where detection of bottom-hole-assembly stick-slip and vibration detection at the surface becomes increasingly problematic. RSVD™ increases drilling efficiency and protects RSS and M/LWD tools from harmful vibrations.

The PathMaker System is the only system available today that transmits a real-time pad contact caliper measurement close to the bit. RTPCC™ measurements are used to optimize surface parameters for consistent directional results.

Benefits include:

  • 8.5” and 12.25” hole sizes
  • Consistent quality and smooth wellbore
  • Increased Rate of Penetration by:
    • Eliminating sliding and orienting motors
    • Consistent doglegs throughout the well
    • Reduced drill string torque and drag
    • Improved hole cleaning through consistent rotation
    • Easier casing runs
    • Better cement jobs (gauged hole)
    • Bit selection for performance, not steerability

Optional Dynamic Pressure Module available for real-time annular and borehole pressure measurements.
